Founded by King Willem II in 1842 as Royal academy, the University of Delft received its current name Delft University of Technology in 1986 and is also known as ‘TU Delft’ (from the Dutch name Technische Universiteit Delft). TU Delft cooperates with many other educational and research institutions, both in the Netherlands and abroad. The high quality of research and teaching is renowned. TU Delft has numerous contacts with governments, trade associations, consultancies, industry and SME’s.

Approximately 5100 employees (FTE: 4566 from which 232 professors) work and study in 8 faculties, one of which is 3mE (Mechanical, Maritime and Materials Engineering).
The maritime department (Maritime and Transport Technology), active in this project, is subdivided into the sections Section Dredging Engineering, Section Transport Engineering and Logistics, Section Ship Hydromechanics and Structures and Section Ship Design Production and Operations. This last section is active in NOVIMAR.

“NOVIMAR promises to be a game changer in short sea and inland shipping. The vessel train concept should enable ship owners to significantly lower their operating costs and thereby improve their competitiveness. This is achieved by implementing the most recent advances in automation and ‘smart shipping’ while preserving the hard-to-replace skills and expertise of a crew. Especially in crowded and confined waters, this combination greatly improves the ease of implementation of the concept.”

- Robert Hekkenberg, Director of Studies BSc Marine Technology
